| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans: |
| We're careening toward the holidays and our annual Christmas Day Benefit Brunch at the Movies (tickets going fast!) and adding two new LIMITED FIVE DAY ENGAGEMENTS and another special late addition to the slate on Friday: - Documentarian Lauren Greenfield (Generation Wealth, The Queen of Versailles) brings us another exposé on excess with The Kingmaker. The result is a scathing portrait of former first lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos. Peter DeBruge of Variety says: "Marcos’ print-the-legend philosophy has particular resonance in a post-truth world, although such sinister undertones sneak up on audiences in a movie that begins, innocently enough, as the latest of Greenfield’s astonishing portraits of wealth run amok."
- A smash hit in China, the animated adventure White Snake arrives for a special limited engagement. Gorgeously rendered in CGI, it's based on a seventh-century Chinese folk tale about two snake demons who assume human form and fall in love with the same man. Pat Padua of the Washington Post assures that "even if you're not familiar with the source material, this Chinese production provides plenty of supernatural thrills for the modern young adult."
- The latest from Todd Haynes, Dark Waters arrives as a special late addition to our screens. Mark Ruffalo stars in this true life tale of a corporate defense attorney who switches sides to expose the misdeeds of a chemical company. Owen Glieberman of Variety raves, "What gives Dark Waters its singular texture is that...Haynes, who has never made a drama remotely like this, colors in the scenario with an underlying dimension of personalized obsession."
