Greetings, Cinemapolitans!

Another new week of movies hits the screens on Friday with a holiday surprise! The early arrival of what's sure to be an award-season favorite:
  • Based on Cheryl Strayed's best-selling memoir, Wild stars Reese Witherspoon in a performance that has already garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. Since its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, critics have been heaping praise onto the actors, the direction, and the deft script, written by novelist Nick Hornby. James Rocchi of Film.com says, "Heartfelt and haunting, sympathetic while still aware of the limits of sympathy, Wild incorporates beautiful direction, smart writing and brave acting."

  • Another award-winning documentary touches down for just SIX DAYS. Happy Valley charts a tumultuous year at Penn State following the football program scandal that resulted in Jerry Sandusky's arrest and Joe Paterno's ouster. IndieWire sums it up: "As it did with the actual case, Happy Valley will divide audiences and create heated discussions over the many contradicting reactions given by its subjects. However, there's one point that won't be controversial: It's one of the best documentaries of the year." Don't miss this VERY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT!

  • Just through the 24th, we have a special chance for some winter chills with the best-reviewed horror film of the year - The Babadook. This debut from Aussie actress turned writer/director Jennifer Kent takes the familiar bogeyman trope and infuses it with strong characters, realism, and truly unsettling production design. Kim Newman of Empire says, "It’s genuinely scary in its jump moments, but also imparts a lingering sense of dread that will stay with you for days." See it before it's gone!
Notice that this week's schedule is a shortened one - the theater will be CLOSED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 22 for our annual staff appreciation day. We'll return on Tuesday for another 364 days of uninterrupted operation.

There is still time to make your reservation for the annual Christmas Day Benefit Brunch at the Movies! You have until Sunday to reserve your seats for this annual tradition that includes a thai buffet and a chance to be the FIRST to see Imitation Game or Big Eyes, or catch Wild, Birdman or Theory of Everything. Tickets are just $45 and can be purchased online. Get them soon - only 75 will be sold!

While you make your holiday plans, get in here and catch The Homesman, Rosewater, and Whiplash before they all leave on Thursday.

See you at the movies!
