| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
The Golden Globe nominations are honoring a number of films currently playing or coming soon to our screens, including one of our THREE new openers coming this Friday: |
| - Documentarian Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture) has unearthed a remarkable amount of previously unreleased footage for his compelling new film, Jane. A major contender for the documentary Oscar, the film tracks the early days of the groundbreaking field research of chimpanzee expert, Jane Goodall. David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter says it "Transcends the boundaries of both nature film and biography."
- Also opening in a special limited engagement is one of the the Golden Globe nominees for best animated feature, The Breadwinner. From the same award-winning animators that brought us The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea comes this luminous—and challenging—depiction of life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Kenneth Turan of the LA Times says it "reminds us yet again that the best of animation takes us anywhere at any time and makes us believe."
- And finally, Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake star in Wonder Wheel, a 1950s period piece of life on Coney Island. This year's installment from Woody Allen, the film follows the family struggles of Winslet's Ginny, as witnessed by the Timberlake's Mickey, a lifeguard and playwright perched above the boardwalk. According to Eric Kohn of IndieWire, "Winslet delivers her most powerful, emotionally resonant performance in more than a decade."
On top of these new movies, we also have some event screenings on the way, including one on THIS Thursday: |
|
New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling new production. Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, it’s directed by Dominic Cooke.
