Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We're almost to our annual Holiday brunch, but before we get there, we have THREE big awards contenders coming on Friday:
  • Winner of the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival and nominated for three Golden Globes, Roma is a sweeping 70s epic from Mexican auteur, Alfonso Cuarón.  Thanks to a special arrangement with Netflix, the film can be seen the way it was intended - on the big screen - but for ONE WEEK ONLYManohla Dargis of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling it "an expansive, emotional portrait of life buffeted by violent forces, and a masterpiece."

  • Willem Dafoe has received a Golden Globe nomination for his acclaimed portrayal of Vincent van Gogh in Julian Schnabel's At Eternity's Gate. Focusing on van Gogh's later years, the film softens the typical "mad genius" portrait of the post-impressionist in favor of a more sensitive exploration of what drives an artist. This is another NY Times Critic's Pick, with Dargis calling it "'not just an exquisite film but an argument for art."

  • A hit at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, Vox Lux is the sophomore effort from actor-turned-director Brady Corbet. Natalie Portman stars as a troubled pop star whose life story exemplifies the contemporary media frenzy that turns tragic news into spectacle into entertainment and back again. Manohla Dargis loves this one, too, saying that "Portman gives the kind of aggressively big performance that teeters precariously, and at times excitingly, on the edge of vulgar indulgence."
In addition to those new titles, there are some special event screenings on the way as well, including one TOMORROW NIGHT
Community Discussion to Follow

Capturing the Flag reveals how a team of voter protection volunteers uncovered striking evidence of voter suppression in North Carolina during the 2016 election. The short film will be followed by a discussion about the importance of democracy reforms and community announcements from people attending.

Also, this date marks the launching of The Democracy Reform Ranking Project - a live advocacy tour and information gathering effort to prioritize the reforms that people believe would most improve our democracy. It is designed to offer an ongoing opportunity for engagement to citizens who are concerned about the direction and effectiveness of government.

The 2018 season wraps up with the multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III. Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett, the cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough.

It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man.

The Family Classics Picture Show introduces the magic of cinema to parents and kids with a year-long series of 10 fun and affordable Sunday matinees. The program wraps up its fourth year on Sunday, December 16th at 2pm with a screening of Capra's holiday favorite, It's a Wonderful Life

Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family.
Get yours in advance - this screening always SELLS OUT!

The series is made possible by lead sponsor The Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley, with additional support from Mama Goose.

While you plan your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Border, Burning, and Free Solo. They have their final screenings THIS Thursday, December 13th!

Also - PLEASE NOTE that the theater will be CLOSED on Monday, December 17th for our annual staff appreciation day (a/k/a their one day off for the year!).
 See you at the movies!
