| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
As we gear up for the holiday season, two new openers join our screens this Friday: - The latest Spike Lee joint arrives for a limited engagement. With Chi-Raq, Lee has remolded Aristophanes' Lysistrata into a modern-day tragicomedy set in the troubled streets of Chicago. Told primarily in rhyme and featuring Samuel L. Jackson as a quasi-Greek chorus, Chi-raq takes on a culture of violence that in Chicago alone has resulted in more than 7,000 deaths over the last 15 years. Amy Nicholson of The Village Voice calls it "a marvel. It's Lee resurrecting his voice — angry, impassioned, and funny as hell — right when we need to hear it."
- Also in a limited engagement comes the remarkable, bloody, and epic new adaptation of Shakespeare's classic Macbeth. Director Justin Kurzel leads a cast that includes Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard as the titular tragic royals. Variety's Guy Lodge calls it "fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed... a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period."
