Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Awards season is heating up, and over the next few weeks, we'll have a slew of Oscar hopefuls debuting on our screens. This Friday, two new films come to roost: - Certainly no stranger to the Mop, Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Biutiful) finally arrives this week with his latest, Birdman. Receiving equal praise for its layered script, outstanding performances, and the sheer technical wonder, Birdman is a showcase for the varied talents of star Michael Keaton that leaves plenty of room for the rest of the equally impressive cast to shine. The Boston Globe's Ty Burr calls it, "a jaw-dropping stylistic wow that spins, pirouettes, turns inside out, and miraculously stays aloft for two hours." Find out what all the buzz is about this weekend!
- If a mind-bending send up of Hollywood, Broadway, and the acting biz isn't your thing, then perhaps the latest from director Lynn Shelton (Your Sister's Sister) will float your boat. Her latest, Laggies, combines the talents of Kiera Knightley, Sam Rockwell, and teen phenom Chloe Grace Moritz for a pre-life crisis comedy. Knightley is the lagging adult of the title who just can't seem to grow all the way up, and her performance is the heart of the film. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle says she "holds the whole contraption together with a performance of spontaneity and offhand inspiration."
On Saturday, a week filled with several special events begins with a a ONE TIME screening of Code Black. Ryan McGarry of Cornell's Weill Medical College directed this amazing documentary that tracks a group of new, idealistic and adrenaline-seeking doctors as they train in a notorious trauma bay in an inner-city LA Emergency Room. When the hospital moves to a swank, new building the rush fades and bureaucracy gridlocks the state of the art facility, and the doctors are faced with the unexpected realities of life and death in a safety-net health care system at the brink of overload.
On Sunday, filmmaker Abby Ginzberg will arrive for a special screening of Soft Vengeance. The film tracks the life of Albie Sachs, a lawyer, writer, art lover and freedom fighter, set against the dramatic events leading to the overthrow of the apartheid regime in South Africa. This special screening will feature a Q &A with filmmaker Abby Ginzberg. The event takes place on Sunday, November 9 at 2 pm. All tickets are $10 for this one-time only screening.
In the meantime, get in here soon if you haven't yet seen The Skeleton Twins and Horns, they both leave on Thursday!
See you at the movies! |
