Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
The holiday season is underway, and we have TWO new openers arriving for special limited engagements on Friday:
  • A big winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Chang-dong Lee's Burning is South Korea's official entry for the Academy Awards. The film follows a tense and awkward triangle between a young woman and two men, and is based on the Haruki Murakami short story, “Barn Burning.” Manohla Dargis of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, praising the thriller for posing the "larger, more agonizing question...[of] what it means to live in a divided, profoundly isolating world that relentlessly drives a wedge between the self and others."

  • Rupert Everett wrote, directed, and stars in The Happy Prince, a thoughtful retelling of the tragic final days of Irish playwright and poet, Oscar Wilde. Set during his exile in Naples and Paris after being released from prison for "gross indecency," the film tracks Wilde's continued relationship with Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian calls it "a deeply felt, tremendously acted tribute to courage."
In addition to those new titles, there are some special one-time only screenings on the way as well:
featuring intro by Kathleen Joyce Weldon from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research

NewsTalk WHCU is partnering with Cinemapolis to launch the Legends and Legacies Film Series. It begins Sunday, December 2nd at 2 pm with the Oscar-winning World War II classic, Tora! Tora! Tora!

This epic 1970 feature about the attack on Pearl Harbor will be shown to commemorate the more than 2,400 Americans who suddenly lost their lives that early Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. To bring perspective into view NewsTalk WHCU proudly presents Kathleen Joyce Weldon, an expert from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research to discuss America’s attitudes toward the Japanese and Germans at the outbreak of World War II.

PRESS PLAY is back for its second season! This collaboration between the Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis puts a currently running play in conversation with a film that explores similar themes. The 2nd season continues on Tuesday, December 4th with the pairing of 2.5 MINUTE RIDE with the Coen Brothers’ award-winning 2009 film, A Serious Man. Both the film and the play address the idiosyncrasies of being Jewish in the U.S.
M. Bevin O’Gara, Producing Artistic Director of the Kitchen Theatre, will be leading the post-screening conversation on Tuesday, December 4
While you plan your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Wildlife. It has its final screenings THIS Thursday, November 29th!
 See you at the movies!
