| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| The holiday season is underway, and we have TWO new openers arriving for special limited engagements on Friday:
- A big winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Chang-dong Lee's Burning is South Korea's official entry for the Academy Awards. The film follows a tense and awkward triangle between a young woman and two men, and is based on the Haruki Murakami short story, “Barn Burning.” Manohla Dargis of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, praising the thriller for posing the "larger, more agonizing question...[of] what it means to live in a divided, profoundly isolating world that relentlessly drives a wedge between the self and others."
- Rupert Everett wrote, directed, and stars in The Happy Prince, a thoughtful retelling of the tragic final days of Irish playwright and poet, Oscar Wilde. Set during his exile in Naples and Paris after being released from prison for "gross indecency," the film tracks Wilde's continued relationship with Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian calls it "a deeply felt, tremendously acted tribute to courage."
In addition to those new titles, there are some special one-time only screenings on the way as well: |
