Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
A new, short schedule starts this Friday with two arrivals as we head toward the Thanksgiving holiday:- Winner of the Jury (runner up) prize in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes, Swedish director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure has been on the lips of top critics ever since. The picture-perfect family ski vacation of Ebba and Tomas is turned upside-down after a disaster - just not the kind you think. Peppered with dark humor and family tension, it's a film that Jessica Kiang of The Playlist says "cleverly and crisply presents a simple truth: we can never know how we might react in a crisis, all we can know is that we’ll be judged on it."
- While he may not be a household name outside of Japan, Isao Takahata co-founded the famed Studio Ghibli with the better known Hayao Miyazaki. His latest stunning animated feature may finally get him noticed stateside. Based on a 10th century Japanese folktale, The Tale of Princess Kaguya follows the titular "princess" from her discovery inside a shining shoot by a bamboo cutter and through adulthood. According to David Ehrlich of the A.V. Club, the film "matures alongside its heroine...giving way to some of the most beautifully expressive animation that Ghibli (or anyone else) has ever produced." Catch this enchanting Cannes hit while you can - it's a limited engagement.
The new season of plays from the Readers' Theatre of Ithaca continues this weekend with an off-book production of Neil Labute's WRECKS. Each of the three performances will be followed by on-screen interview with LaBute himself. Filmed directly from Fire Proof Studios in Brooklyn, NY where he’s shooting his new DirecTV show "Billy and Billie." Advance tickets are still available for the performances, which take place on Friday and Saturday at 8 PM and Sunday at 6:30.
On Tuesday, November 25, Professor Cyndy Scheibe and LACS teacher Chris Sperry, co-directors of Ithaca College’s media literacy initiative, Project Look Sharp, will be speaking after the 7pm showing of Rosewater. Scheibe and Sperry recently returned from Iran where they delivered key-note addresses about integrating critical thinking and media literacy into Iranian education at the First International Conference on Media Literacy in Iran. In their presentation, they will show media, tell stories and interact with the audience about their experiences in Iran and the role of media in shaping our cross-cultural understandings and misunderstandings. BUY TICKETS in advance for this one-time event!
Keep an eye on your inbox this weekend - an all new schedule that begins with the Wednesday premiere of The Theory of Everything will be coming soon! While you wait, get in here and catch Pride before it leaves on Thursday.
See you at the movies! |
