| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
The Thanksgiving holiday is coming right up, and along with it come three new openers on Friday and a special pre-holiday opening on Wednesday the 23rd: - Director Barry Jenkins' festival favorite Moonlight finally arrives in Ithaca on Friday. This unique character study utilizes multiple actors to track the life of Chiron through three key phases of his young life as he grapples with his own identity. A.O. Scott of the NY Times calls it "an urgent social document, a hard look at American reality and a poem written in light, music and vivid human faces."
JOIN US FRIDAY AT 7 pm FOR A SPECIAL OPENING NIGHT Q & A WITH ACTOR (and I.C. STUDENT) JHARREL JEROME
- Korean auteur Park Chan-wook returns to our screens with his erotic period piece, The Handmaiden. Three competing points of view flesh out the story of a girl from the slums who infiltrates the high society world of a Japanese heiress in a film that The Hollywood Reporter calls "an amusingly kinky erotic thriller and love story that brims with delicious surprises."
- Harry & Snowman is the inspiring underdog tale of a trainer, his unlikely show horse, and their rise to success in the 1950s. A NY Times Critics' Pick, Helen T. Verongos says the film, like its star, "melts the heart." Don't miss this limited engagement!
- Finally, looking ahead to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we welcome the special early opening of Jeff Nichols' beautiful historical drama, Loving. Based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, the film showcases the relationship and marriage that led to a landmark Supreme Court case. Manohla Dargis of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, praising its "insistent, quotidian quiet," and for how it "plucks two figures from history and imagines them as they once were, when they were people instead of monuments to American exceptionalism."
