| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
The Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner, so that means some special Wednesday openers coming next week. In the meantime, here's a Friday to Tuesday schedule featuring TWO new films arriving for the weekend: |
| - Arriving earlier than expected is the smash directorial debut from Greta Gerwig - Lady Bird. Saoirse Ronan stars in this rollicking coming of age tale as the titular "Lady Bird," a high school senior struggling to discover herself and her path. A big hit at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, the film gets a Critic's Pick nod from A.O. Scott of the NY Times, who recommends that "you pay the right kind of attention to "Lady Bird" - absorbing its riffs and digressions as well as its melodies, its choral passages along with its solos and duets - you will almost certainly love it. It's hard not to."
- Brian Selznick's beloved book Wonderstruck comes to the screen thanks to the remarkable talents of director Todd Haynes (Carol). The interwoven tales of two deaf children unspool across fifty years and two distinct filmmaking styles in a mystery that rewards the curiosity of its characters and the audience. Nominated for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, this one also receives the Critic's Pick seal of approval from Manohla Dargis of the NY Times, who calls it "a lovely ode to imagination and to the stories that make us who we are."
Before we get to the weekend, don't forget about our special ONE DAY ONLY event screening on Thursday: |
| Frederick Wiseman’s latest film goes behind the scenes of one of the greatest knowledge institutions in the world and reveals it as a place of welcome, cultural exchange and learning. With 92 branches throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, the library is committed to being a resource for all the inhabitants of this multifaceted and cosmopolitan city, and beyond. The New York Public Library exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual’s right to know and be informed. |
| Sun, Nov 19 at 2 pm The Family Classics Picture Show continues its 3rd year on Sunday, November 19th at 2pm with a screening of Captains Courageous.
To get families excited about the magic of the movies, each matinee features an introduction by actor, magician, and movie buff David Moreland and includes custom enrichment guides to help continue the conversation after the credits roll.
Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor The Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley, with additional support from Mama Goose. |
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Battle of the Sexes and Victoria & Abdul. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, November 16th!
