Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
More awards season hopefuls arrive on Friday, with two festival favorites hitting our screens:- Based on his 2013 short of the same name, writer/director Damien Chazelle's Whiplash wowed audiences at both Sundance and Cannes. Veteran character actor J.K. Simmons (Juno, Burn After Reading) shines as Fletcher, the no-nonsense music instructor hellbent on turning a promising new student into a jazz great. Miles Teller (Spectacular Now) did much of the drumming himself in this high-tension, jazz fueled, Grand Jury Prize-winning drama. John Bleasdale of Cine Vue calls it a "supreme meditation on the encouragement of brilliance and the excesses of power," and"a stunning musical drama with a rhythm section to die for."
- Jon Stewart was so moved by the story of Maziar Bahari that he went on leave from the Daily Show to write and direct Rosewater. Stewart's debut feature blends politics, foreign intrigue, and a touch of bleak, black humor to portray the very real dangers faced by contemporary journalists. As Bahari, Gael Garcia Bernal (No) portrays the struggle faced by thousands in solitary confinement around the globe. Together, they capture a complex portrait of a changing Middle East. As Scott Foundas of Variety puts it: "Through Bahari’s eyes, and with utmost respect for the Iranian people, “Rosewater” gazes out at a nation flirting perilously with a new era of social liberties, and finds glimmers of hope in the darkness."
It's baaaaaack. The 3rd Annual Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival has come home to roost from November 12th through the 16th, with TWENTY-EIGHT screenings here at Cinemapolis, additional shows at Cornell Cinema, concerts at CSMA and an art show on the Commons! Creator Hugues Barbier has curated a vast array of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films from around the globe, so gear up with some 6 pack pass cards and set your agenda by visiting the FULL SCHEDULE HERE.
On Monday, our friends at Flicstart.com are back with their annual screening of The Room, the 2003 cult hit that might just be the world's worst film. Expect costumes, crowds shouting back to the screen, and--what else?--spoons. The event begins at 7 pm on Monday, November 17th. . Tickets are available in advance at Flicstart.com for $9.50 or at the door for $11.
With all these special screenings, there will be some holes in the regular schedule, so read the showtimes below carefully! In the meantime, get in here soon if you haven't yet seen Laggies, it leaves on Thursday!
