| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| A new year of movies continues with TWO new openers arriving on Friday:
- Supreme Court Justice (and Cornellian) Ruth Bader Ginsburg gets the biopic treatment in On The Basis of Sex. Felicity Jones portrays Ruth in the early years of her career, tracking her rise from Harvard Law School to the groundbreaking gender discrimination case of Charles Moritz. Yolanda Machado of The Wrap says Jones "embodies Ginsburg with such aplomb that when she locks her steely eyes with the camera, you can feel it in your bones that this woman is about to change the world."
- Filmmaker Peter Hedges (Pieces of April) directs his son Lucas opposite Julia Roberts in the rehab drama Ben is Back. Roberts shines as a matriarch struggling to keep her family together as her son returns unexpectedly from rehab on Christmas Eve. A.O. Scott names this one a NY Times Critic's Pick, saying "what is so moving and effective about Roberts’s work here is her shrewd subversion of her long-established persona."
On top of these new titles, don't miss the special events on the way this week: |

The Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach & Services and Planned Parenthood's Out for Health: LGBT Health & Wellness Program are partnering to present the Transuary Film Series—three award-winning documentary films, each highlighting unique experiences of members of the transgender community.
The series kicks off on Wednesday, January 16 at 7 pm with a special screening of MAN MADE. The film takes us into the heart of transgender male (FTM) culture, revealing unexpected truths about gender, masculinity, humanity and love. Four trans men (who, like the film’s director, were born and raised female), take a variety of life paths toward stepping on stage at Trans FitCon, the only all-transgender bodybuilding competition in the world (held in Atlanta, GA). MAN MADE is a character-driven, intimate, and riveting verité-style competition film, but also a unique social justice narrative. It speaks to the ways in which we all choose to define and reshape ourselves, both figuratively and literally.
All three Transuary screenings will feature resources and information about local transgender services. |
