| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| We've finished one festival, but there's another on the way this weekend, along with TWO new openers: - Master Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) has rethought and remade the Giallo classic, Suspiria. His new vision is a wild ride, following a young dancer as she descends into madness, magic, and the macabre at an international dance company. Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out says "It’s only hours afterward that Guadagnino’s film will cohere for you and yield its buried treasures: the bonds of secret sorority, the strength of a line of dancers moving like a single organism, the present rippling with the muscle memory of the past. It’s so good, it’s scary."
- Melissa McCarthy takes a dramatic (and awards worthy?) turn as author-turned-forger Lee Israel in the true life tale, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Richard E. Grant co-stars in this hit from the Toronto Film Festival. Peter Debruge of Variety says, "It’s the human side of the character that makes this McCarthy’s best performance to date, revealing haunting insights into friendship, loneliness, and creative insecurity."
In addition to these new titles, we also have some one-night screenings coming up, including one TOMORROW night: |
| featuring intro and performance from Zaun Marshburn
Don't miss the one chance to see this NY TIMES Critic's Pick on the life and legacy of renowned jazz percussionist, Milford Graves. Not your typical bio-pic, this documentary has been a hit on the festival circuit and arrives in Ithaca for this special screening, which will feature an introduction and performance by local percussionist, Zaun Marshburn. |
| Thu, Nov 8 at 7 pm FREE ADMISSION
The Tale is part-fantasy part-memoir from documentary film-director Jennifer Fox about her own childhood experience with sexual abuse and how memories of trauma reshape themselves over a lifetime.
This FREE screening and discussion is hosted by the Advocacy Center (theadvocacycenter.org) as part of their Enough Abuse Tompkins project. There will be a facilitated discussion following the film, and participants are encouraged to schedule child sexual abuse prevention trainings with Enough Abuse Tompkins to ensure that Fox’s childhood experience is not re-lived in our community.
