| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans: |
| A VERY busy weekend is on the way, including THREE new openers arriving on Friday: - Documentarian Stanley Nelson (The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution) returns to our screens with the expansive Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool. Owen Gleiberman of Variety calls it "intensely gratifying. Nelson is a filmmaker with a sixth sense for how to nudge history into the present."
- Brazilian filmmaker Alejandro Landes was a winner at Sundance this year with Monos, a mesmerizing tale of jungle-dwelling child soldiers in a near-future South American conflict. Eric Kohn of IndieWire says "Landes delivers a suspenseful encapsulation of alienated youth enmeshed in pointless battles that can only lead to further destruction."
- Gearing up for the spookiest time of year, we bring you Wrinkles the Clown, a new documentary detailing the career of a clown who's paid by parents to scare their misbehaving children. Patrick Cavanaugh of ComicBook.com says it "sheds light not only on one of Florida's weirdest viral sensations, but also offers a fascinating exploration of folklore in the digital age."
AND a handful of festival friends are taking up residence over the weekend with special screenings you shouldn't miss: |
| | Fri, Oct 4 at 5 pm The Ithaca Pan Asian American Film Festival is dedicated to supporting Asian American film, video and media makers both nationwide and throughout the upstate New York area while promoting films created by, starring, and/or about Asian Americans. |
| | Our Friends from Ithaca Fantastik kick off an October FULL of special events with the Ithaca Premiere of Harpoon, a horror comedy about three self-absorbed rich kids stranded on a yacht. Things escalate quickly. Don't miss the one night only screening on Friday night, and mark your calendar for the rest of the iF slate coming your way this month! |
| | Qinfolk is a film, arts and mental health festival dedicated to the celebration of queer and trans people of color. We’re here to center and exalt the creative expression of our community and cultivate safe spaces of representation and healing. |
| | 2019 marks the sixth annual celebration of Latin American filmmakers from all over the continent, and the official festival selection for this year includes critically-acclaimed and award-winning films from seven different countries.
On Sunday, Oct 6 at 2 pm, the festival presents Filiberto, a documentary on a professional musician who abandons his trumpet and family to live the clandestine life of an armed revolutionary for Puerto Rican independence.
|
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Aquarela and Brittany Runs a Marathon. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, October 3rd.
