Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
A surprise early arrival is just one of THREE new films debuting on Friday:
- Viral video maven Justin Simien won a Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at Sundance this year for his feature debut, Dear White People. Set at an Ivy League campus, this timely, bitingly satirical college comedy has audiences and critics raving. Featuring frank (and frankly hilarious) depictions of contemporary race relations, James Rocchi of The Playlist calls it "a showcase of clever craft and direction as well as whip-smart comedic writing brought to life by a dedicated, charismatic cast that also conveys real ideas and emotion."
- After a smash debut at Cannes, the UK 80s period comedy Pride arrives stateside. Tony Award winning director Matthew Warchus has stacked up a stellar cast to tell the true life tale of a group of gay and lesbian activists that took up the cause of striking Welsh mineworkers. Critics are favorably comparing it to feel-good labor class comedies like The Full Monty, Billy Elliot, and Calendar Girls, and Michael Ordoña of the San Francisco Chronicle says it "is, quite simply, one of the best movies of the year so far."
- Screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive) makes his bow behind the camera to direct The Two Faces of January, and Rex Reed of the NY Observer loves it: "Carefully directed and gorgeous to look at, with haunting performances and maximum suspense, The Two Faces of January is an exemplary thriller about murder and sex in exotic locales, adapted from a hair-raising Patricia Highsmith novel that makes the transition from page to screen with pulsating ease."

Special screenings on the way this week include the continuation of our new season of National Theatre Live: the Tennessee Williams classic A Streetcar Named Desire hits our screens on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, October 25th at 1:30 pm. Don't miss Gillian Anderson and Ben Foster in this steamy new production captured live from the Young Vic in London's West End!
By popular demand, we have a special ONE DAY ONLY set of showings of For No Good Reason. Join Johnny Depp on a wild and visually stunning trip with the equally wild and iconic illustrator Ralph Steadman. The critically acclaimed documentary screens at 5 pm, 7 pm, and 9 pm only on Tuesday, October 28th.
