Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Next week, we head towards the end of October with five nights of special events and two new films:
  • A radical legacy is at the heart of Stanley Nelson's acclaimed new documentary, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution. Using contemporary interviews as well as historical footage, the film deftly chronicles the 50 year history of the movement and presents issues that continue to be relevant today. A.O. Scott of the NY Times calls it an "electrifying film," and Odie Henderson of RogerEbert.com hails it as a necessary documentary that "deserves to be seen, studied and discussed."  On Thursday, October 29th, you'll have an opportunity to do just that. The 7 pm screening of the film will be followed followed by a panel discussion / talkback moderated by Eric Kofi Acree, Director of the John Henrik Clarke Africana Library. Panelists will include Carole Boyce DaviesSean Eversley Bradwell,  Kevin Gaines and Nadia Marie Sasso.

  • Also coming this week is the violently gripping Civil War/home invasion thriller, The Keeping Room. Director Daniel Barber (Harry Brown) partnered with first-time screenwriter Julia Hart to tell this tight-knit story of three women left to defend their South Carolina home from a pair of wild scouts from Sherman's army. Eric Kohn of Indiewire calls the result a "feminist western with bite" that "foregrounds its characters' struggles against the barriers stacked against them."
A week of special events begins on Sunday, October 25th, as we join with the Wharton Studio Museum to continue the celebration of Silent Movie Month in Ithaca. At 2 pm, don't miss a special screening of the Buster Keaton classic, The General!

All tickets are just $6 for a chance to see a true masterpiece of the silent era on the big screen.
Then, on Monday, October 26th, our friends from the Cornell Hip Hop Collection arrive for a two days of special screenings to celebrate their visiting scholar (and hip hop legend) Africa Bambaataa. Monday at 7 pm, we welcome director Shan Nicholson for a screening of his film Rubble Kings, followed by a a discussion featuring Nicolson, legendary Bronx activist Lorraine Montenegro, Ithaca City School District superintendent Luvelle Brown, and Afrika Bambaataa.

The two day event finishes up on Tuesday at 7 pm with a screening of the new documentary, Stretch and Bobbito: Radio that Changed Lives. That film will also be followed by a panel discussion, this time featuring Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia, moderated by DJ Rich Medina, with intros by Afrika Bambaataa.
Then, on Wednesday at 7:15, our friends from the Olive Branch Film Series return for another installment of their introduction to Palestine through cinema. With Jaffa, The Orange's Clockwork, Israeli documentarian Eval Sivan examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of the Jaffa orange. The OBFS will present two more screenings through November and December this year.

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch The Second Mother soon. It leaves THIS Thursday (October 22).
 See you at the movies!
