Greetings, Cinemapolitans!

The rush to get movies on screens before the end of the year has begun, and that means shorter runs for popular films. So THAT means you SHOULDN'T WAIT to catch the great titles on the way, including three new openers this Friday:
  • Writer/director Peter Landesman (Kill the Messenger) returns with another true-life story of a man desparately trying to reveal the truth. Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House stars Liam Neeson as the man who would be "Deep Throat," the informant that helped Woodward and Bernstein crack the case on the Watergate scandal. Allen Hunter of Screen International calls it a "A solidly engrossing political drama, anchored by a commanding central performance from Liam Neeson."

  • Arriving ahead of schedule this week is the directorial debut from actor Andy Serkis. Breathe tells the inspiring story of Robin and Diana Cavendish, a couple who defied the odds by overcoming polio and traveling the world to help others afflicted by the debilitating disease. Oscar buzz is already floating around Andrew Garfield's compelling performance, and Eric Kohn of Indiewire calls the film "a gorgeous, romantic drama that earns its emotional resonance."
  • Famed Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei brings his bracing and beautiful style to Human Flow, a stunning new documentary tracking the global refugee crisis. Shot in 23 countries by a dozen cinematographers, the film captures the enormity of the 65 million migrants currently looking to escape hunger, hardship, and war in their homelands. Deborah Young of the Hollywood Reporter says it "has an amazing breadth and a relentless moral drive that will make it a reference point for this subject." DON'T MISS THIS LIMTED ENGAGEMENT.
There are LOAD of special screenings on the way in the coming week, as well:

The weekend kicks off with ANOTHER special screening from our friends at Ithaca Fantastik. They're counting down the days to this year's festival (starts November 3rd!) with an unprecedented look at the iconic shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), the “man behind the curtain”, and the screen murder that profoundly changed the course of world cinema.

Don't miss the award winning doc, 78/52 playing ONE NIGHT ONLY screening - Friday, October 20 @ 9:30 pm

The Family Classics Picture Show continues its 3rd year on Sunday, October 22nd at 2pm with a screening of Arsenic & Old Lace.

To get families excited about the magic of the movies, each matinee features an introduction by actor, magician, and movie buff David Moreland and includes custom enrichment guides to help continue the conversation after the credits roll.

Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor The Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley, with additional support from Mama Goose.

In a tour-de-force performance, writer-actor Aaron Davidman conjures a host of different characters while seeking answers to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in “Wrestling Jerusalem,” a film adaptation of his one-man show. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with political scientist Miram Elman and Women Wage Peace organizer Inbal Shlosberg.

This screening is being organized through the TUGG service, so reserve your tickets TODAY to make sure the event is confirmed!
featuring Q & A w/ scientists from Boyce Thompson Institute & Cornell University
co-presented by BTI and the Cornell Alliance for Science

From Academy Award®-nominated director Scott Hamilton Kennedy and narrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson, Food Evolution is set amidst the controversy surrounding GMOs and food. Traveling from Hawaiian papaya groves, to banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, “Food Evolution” wrestles with the emotions and the evidence driving one of the most heated arguments of our time.

Join scientists (2 of whom where in the film!) from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for a viewing and discussion of the film.

Commemorate the Centennial of the Russian Revolution with this silent masterpiece by Sergei Eisenstein which presents a dramatized version of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers. Listed among the best examples of early world cinema, Battleship Potemkin features iconic scenes that continue to influence filmmakers almost 100 years later.  This screening will feature remarks from Ithaca College scholars, including Andrew Thompson and Patricia Zimmermann.
The screening is sponsored by the Departments of Sociology, History, and Politics at Ithaca College; Media Arts, Sciences, And Studies at Ithaca College; the Park Center For Independent Media at Ithaca College, and the ILR School at Cornell University

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Brad's Status, Columbus, and Dolores. They all have their last screenings THIS Thursday, October 19th!

 See you at the movies!
