| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Three new films and a few special events are on the way next week at the theater: - He Named Me Malala highlights the remarkable life of Nobel Peace Prize winner and women's education advocate Malala Yousafzai. Through a blend of animation and live action, director Davis Guggenheim (Waiting for Superman) has created what the Hollywood Reporter calls "some of his most heartfelt work in this tribute to Malala and her entire family."
- The true-life story of New Jersey detective Laurel Hester gets the dramatic treatment in Freeheld. Based on the documentary short of the same name, the film recounts the groundbreaking 2005 court battle over Hester's pension benefits going to Stacie Andree, her registered domestic partner. Julianne Moore and Ellen Page star and provide, as the Village Voice says, "the hearts of a couple it's a privilege to get to know."
- Finally, don't miss the limited engagement of Coming Home, the latest award winning masterpiece from Chinese director Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers). Set in the 1970s, the film tells the tragic tale of a family torn apart by the Cultural Revolution and memory loss. Simply put, the Observer calls it "Elegant and wrenching...a quiet, haunting masterpiece."
