| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| It's an exciting weekend on the way, with FOUR new openers arriving on Friday:
- The directing team behind the hit mountaineering doc Meru are back with the stunning festival favorite, Free Solo. It chronicles the efforts of Alex Honnold as he becomes the first person to free solo climb Yosemite's El Capitan Wall. Jeannette Catsoulis of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, praising its "heart-stopping camera angles and crisp, vertigo-inducing vistas."
- Four acting legends—Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith—enjoy a spot of conversation in the Certified Fresh documentary, Tea with the Dames. Glenn Kenny of the NY Times says, "For the simple idea of sitting them all at a table and turning on a couple of movie cameras, the director Roger Mitchell should get a royal commendation himself."
- Kiera Knightly stars in another NY Times Critic's Pick, Colette. Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) writes and directs this biopic treatment of 19th century French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, which Manohla Dargis says "takes a light, enjoyably fizzy approach to its subject."
- Finally, don't miss a limited engagement of the Certified Fresh doc Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. A hit at this year's Sundance, the film takes a deep dive into the life of the outspoken Sri Lankan artist. David Ehrlich of IndieWire says it "offers an intimate profile of a righteously modern renegade without ever feeling like propaganda or a plea to stream her latest album on Spotify."
We've got these new movies PLUS some special screenings on the way, including one TONIGHT: |
