Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
At Cinemapolis, we pride ourselves as being a spot to view movies you won't be able to see elsewhere. We understand that the films we show won't be for everyone. In that sense, the film opening on New Year's Day will not be an exception:
- Surrounded by the controversy of the hack of Sony's internal computer network, The Interview is a film that almost wasn't seen in theaters. Threats from the hacker group resulted in the major movie theater chains canceling their screenings and Sony pulling the film from theatrical release altogether. Then our friends at Art House Convergence stepped in.
Their open letter to Sony executives pledged the support of independent cinemas around the country to exhibit the movie "to express the value and power of freedom and to support you, our artistic and business colleagues, during a time of great vexation." The subsequent whirlwind of press and publicity resulted in the unlikeliest of partnerships--one between a low-brow Seth Rogen comedy and art house cinemas.
On Thursday, we join 300 independently owned and operated movie theaters to show the film that HitFix says "once again proves that Rogen and Goldberg will do anything, no matter how dark, for a big laugh, and that character is just as important as punchlines in their work." The Interview has been called "gutsy and outrageous" and "infantile and imbecilic," often by the same critics.
Come see what all the fuss is about - it's showing for ONE WEEK ONLY!
A number of Cinemapolitans have praised us for bringing this film to Ithaca, but admit that they have no intention of seeing it. If you'd like to support the decision, but not see the movie, feel free to visit our DONOR PAGE and make a "donation in lieu of ticket." :-)
As a remarkably successful year finishes up, get in here and catch the Oscar-bound CitizenFour before it leaves on Wednesday.
See you for a New Year at the movies! |
