| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
October continues with more festival and award season films. Three new openers hit our screens this weekend: - Richard Gere stars in Time Out of Mind, the latest character-driven drama from writer/director Oren Moverman (The Messenger). Gere turns in a career-topping performance as George, a homeless man in New York City who's looking to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. This spare, day-in-the-life, character study is what Justin Chang of Variety calls, "a haunting piece of urban poetry that further confirms Oren Moverman as a socially conscious filmmaker of rare conviction and authority."
- French actress Mélanie Laurent (Enemy, Aloft) takes a second spin behind the camera to direct and co-write Breathe. A subtle blend of romance and terror, this examination of adolescent love and obsession follows the increasingly dangerous relationship between Charlie and Sarah, two French suburban teens. Variety's Scott Foundas calls it "a modest but acutely observed and affecting adolescent portrait that suggests a chaste 'Blue Is a Warmest Color' by way of 'Single White Female.'" Don't miss this limited engagement.
- Another limited engagement arrives on Friday in the form of The Second Mother. Winner of awards at the Berlin and Sundance Film Festivals, this Brazilian study of domestic class politics follows the lives of a live-in housekeeper, her daughter, and the family she serves. According to the Hollywood Reporter, writer/director Anna Muylaert "dissects with both chilling precision and humor such matters as class differences, real mothers vs. caretakers and whether privilege and one's own station are things that can be questioned or changed."
