| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We begin October with THREE new openers on Friday: |
| - Arriving one week earlier than expected, we're happy to welcome Battle of the Sexes, the latest from directors Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine). Based on the true story of the 1973 tennis match between Bille Jean King and Bobby Riggs, the film stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell and explores the personal stories and behind-the-scenes machinations that made the TV-friendly "battle" a touchstone in the fight for gender parity in athletics. Todd McCarthy of the The Hollywood Reporter says that "just about everything about this film is winning and gratifying."
- Dame Judi Dench once again takes on the role of monarch in Victoria & Abdul. Directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen), the film is a mostly true account of the friendship struck up between Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim, an Indian Muslim who enters her court in her 50th year on the throne. Christopher Orr of The Atlantic says it's "worth seeing for Dench's magisterial performance and for Frears's light but sure directorial touch."
- The Unknown Girl marks a return to our screens for Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Two Days, One Night). Known for their deeply observed character studies, the Brothers Dardenne inject a sense of mystery into the story of Jenny, a young medic who becomes obsessed with the life and death of an unknown immigrant who dies shortly after trying to gain entrance to Jenny's clinic. A.O. Scott of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, and says it "is as tense as a police procedural, and as mysterious as a religious parable." Don't miss this LIMITED ENGAGEMENT.
Some special screenings are on the way in the coming week, as well: |

Our friends at Ithaca Fantastik are gearing up for their annual festival with the first of THREE special Friday night screenings in October. The month of events kicks off with Korean action master Byung-gil Jung's latest, The Villainess. A mash-up of La Femme Nikita, Kill Bill and a handful of other female-focused revenge tales, Variety says it "succeeds in being one-of-a-kind for its delirious action choreography and overall narrative dementia."
