| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
We're heading into October with TWO new openers on Friday: - Demon, the final film from Polish filmmaker Marcin Wrona, puts a contemporary spin on the Jewish legend of the dybbuk, an evil spirit that can occupy the bodies of the living. This is far from your typical horror movie, though. The film follows Peter, a Brit who moves to Poland to marry a local woman and build a new life and new home in a new land. He accidentally unearths something sinister that takes hold of him during their nuptials, but the family and friends at the celebration prove to be just as dangerous. Manohla Dargis names it a NY Times Critics' Pick, calling Demon "a movie that raises light shivers by tapping into historical memory and employing some satisfying, bluntly old-fashioned screen magic."
- The great literary hoax of the 21st century (so far) takes center stage in Author: The JT LeRoy Story. Director Jeff Feuerzeig tracks the rise and fall of the titular LeRoy, the wunderkind of the publishing world whose seedy semi-autobiographical best-sellers—and entire existence—were revealed by the NY Times to be the fabrication of author Laura Albert. Relying heavily on interviews with Albert herself, the film delves into the scandal from the eyes of the unreliable narrator at the heart of it all. According to Eric Kohn of IndieWire, Feuerzeig succeeds at "constructing a fascinating treatise on creative desire, internal grievances and fame as compelling as anything the writer herself dreamed up." Don't miss this limited engagement.

| On Sunday, our weekend finishes up with the launch of Ithaca Sustainable Seafood Week and a special screening of the documentary, The Breach. Filmmaker Mark Titus will be on hand to present his journey to discover why wild salmon populations plummeted in his native Pacific Northwest and what might bring them back. Along the way, Titus unravels a trail of human hubris, historical amnesia and potential tragedy looming in Alaska – all conspiring to end the most sustainable wild food left on the planet. Just one chance to see the film in Ithaca - Sunday, October 2 at 2:30 pm!
