| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
The busy Fall season continues next week, with THREE new openers on Friday: |
| - Documentarian Joshua Weinstein makes his narrative feature debut with Menashe, a family drama set in Brooklyn's Hasidic community. Performed almost entirely in Yiddish, it's a dramatization based on the real-life experiences of the film's star, Menashe Lustig. Claudia Puig of The Wrap calls it "a warm, relatable and tender tale about parental love, religion and belonging, told humanely and with vivid authenticity."
- Tracing the lives of three greats of the Blues, Sidemen: Long Road to Glory is the first documentary from director Scott Rosenbaum. Here for a ONE WEEK LIMITED ENGAGEMENT, the film celebrates pianist Pinetop Perkins, guitarist Hubert Sumlin and drummer Willie “Big Eyes” Smith —all of whom made their mark performing with the likes of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. Joe Leydon of Variety says it is "an exceptionally entertaining and captivating tribute to the men and their music"
The 7:20 screening on Saturday, September 16 will be followed by a Q & A with director Scott Rosenbaum and producer Tony Grazia
- The struggles of daily life in war-era Japan are beautifully animated in the award-winning In This Corner of the World. Directed by former Ghibli animator Sunao Katabuchi, it tells the tale of Suzu, a teenage bride trying to keep her family fed. Stephen Kelly of Total Film calls it "an exquisite portrait of Hiroshima before the bomb that conjures a powerful sense of what – and who – was lost."
Some special screenings are on the way in the coming week, as well, including one on THIS THURSDAY: |
| Thursday, Sept 14 at 5 pm FREE ADMISSION
From the creators of the groundbreaking film, THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE, comes GENERATION FOUND, a powerful story about one community coming together to ignite a youth addiction recovery revolution in their hometown.
Devastated by an epidemic of addiction, Houston faced the reality of burying and locking up its young people at an alarming rate. And so in one of the largest cities in America, visionary counselors, law school dropouts, aspiring rock musicians, retired football players, oil industry executives, and church leaders came together to build the world’s largest peer-driven youth and family recovery community.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
|
|
Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family.

|
These special screenings will include presentations from film and theatre experts to help put the Bard’s work in a contemporary context.
The series features classic presentations of Shakespeare plays, alongside adaptations based on a Shakespeare work. Leading off on Wednesday, September 20th is Joss Whedon’s interpretation of Much Ado About Nothing. |
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Patti Cake$ and Whose Streets? They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, September 14th!
