| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Now that Summer is unofficially behind us, it's time for a VERY full Fall movie-going season. It starts this Friday with THREE new openers: |
| - Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are once again eating their way through Europe, and we get to tag along on The Trip to Spain. This third installment of the series finds the British duo a bit older, but none the wiser, as they explore middle-age and their own friendship, all while sampling the best cuisine the Iberian Peninsula has to offer. David Ehrlich of IndieWire calls it, simply, " the funniest film of the year."
- The eruption of activism in the face of tragedy is at the heart of Whose Streets?, the new documentary tracking the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Here for a ONE WEEK LIMITED ENGAGEMENT, this cinematic debut from co-directors Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis focuses on personal stories in the aftermath of the killing of Mike Brown by police in Ferguson, MO. IndieWire's Jude Dry says it is, "Raw and unadorned...a documentary in the truest sense of the word; an actual moving document of events fresh in the country’s memory, but never before laid as bare as they are here."
The 2pm screening on Saturday, September 9 will be followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Eric Kofi Acree, Cinemapolis Board Member and Director of the John Henrik Clarke Africana Library at Cornell.
- Two French Catherines, Deneuve and Frot, come face to face for a pair of powerhouse performances in The Midwife, the latest family drama from Martin Provost. The film follows the strained reunion of a midwife and her father's mistress, as secrets from the past come to the surface. Thelma Adams of the Observer give it high praise, saying Deneuve "is a force of nature, open and undone, working in the open-a-vein honesty of Gena Rowlands in A Woman under the Influence or Gloria."
Some special screenings are on the way in the coming week, as well, including one on THIS THURSDAY: |
| Thursday, Sept 7 at 7 pm FREE ADMISSION
This screening, in conjunction with the upcoming Catalyst Quartet concert at Barnes Hall, is an in-depth, verité based look at three kids — two in West Philadelphia and one in New York City’s Harlem — as they participate in a pair of Sistema-inspired youth orchestra programs.
The screening will be held with a discussion curated by an area ethnomusicologist. More on the concert at CornellConcertSeries.com.
Then, NEXT Tuesday, don't miss this ONE DAY ONLY SCREENING EVENT: |

One Day Screening Event
Filmed with extraordinary access over more than two years, MAY IT LAST is a deeply intimate and revealing look at the North Carolina band fronted by Seth and Scott Avett.
It charts the Avett Brothers’ decade-and-a-half rise, while chronicling their 2016 collaboration with famed producer Rick Rubin on the critically-acclaimed album “True Sadness.”
Using the recording process as a backdrop, the film depicts a lifelong creative partnership put to the test as band members undergo marriage, divorce, parenthood, illness, and the challenges of the music business.
|
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch The Glass Castle and An Inconvenient Sequel. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, September 7th!
