| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Before we get into the new movies coming your way for the holiday weekend, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate Labor Day and give thanks for the devoted staff that keeps Cinemapolis open and showing your favorite films 364 days a year. |
| For three years, Cinemapolis has proudly been a Living Wage Employer, certified by the Tompkins County Worker's Center. Our board and leadership believe that people who devote their lives to working in the arts should be able to afford living in a community that so values the arts, so we've made the commitment to ensure this standard for all of our employees.
We couldn't have made this committment without the generosity of Members and Donors like you. Revenue from tickets and concessions cover less than 75% of our operating expenses, so contributions from our supporters keep Cinemapolis a lively, thriving part of Ithaca's vibrant arts community.
Please consider celebrating this Labor Day by making a gift to your favorite arthouse cinema. |
| And NOW on to the movies for the Holiday weekend. Our first new title opens early on WEDNESDAY, August 30th: - Sundance hit Patti Cake$ is the debut feature for music video director Geremy Jasper. Danielle MacDonald stars in this coming of age tale that follows the unlikely rise of Jersey-girl rapper, Patti (a/k/a Killa P), as she tries to use her rhyming skills to get out of a dead-end job and a less than functional family household. Roger Moore of Movie Nation calls it a " hilarious, inspiring lowdown New Jersey epic -- 'Precious' meets 'Hustle & Flow.'"
And then, opening on Friday: - A bevy of Oscar winners are at the center of Justin Chadwick's steamy period piece, Tulip Fever—Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Dame Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love), and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds) all chew up a script adapted by Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings) and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) round out the cast in this tale of forbidden romance between a young married woman and the artist commissioned to paint her portrait, set in 17th century Amsterdam.

| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Brigsby Bear and Step. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, August 31st!
