| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
It's back-to-school time, and thanks to a last minute surprise addition to our line-up, we have THREE new openers coming on Friday: - Stand-up comedian and frequent NPR contributor Mike Birbiglia (Sleepwalk with Me) wrote, directed, and stars in Don't Think Twice, a "certified fresh" comedy that chronicles the fall-out when one member a struggling improv group hits the big time, leaving the rest behind. The resulting insider's look at what it means to be funny for a living serves up both laughs and cringes. Ty Burr of the Boston Globe says it "manages the neat trick of remaining sweet-natured while letting absolutely no one off the hook."
- A hit at this year's Sundance, Southside with You is writer/director Richard Tanne's fictionalized take on the first date between Barack and Michelle Obama. Borrowing the format of Linklater's "Sunrise" trilogy, the plot unfolds entirely over a single day in 1989, as the future First Family meet cute and explore Chicago's south side together. While the romance works, this is more than just a "date movie." As Variety's Justin Chang puts it, the film "deepens into a pointed, flowing conversation about the many challenges (and varieties) of African-American identity, the need for both idealism and compromise, and the importance of making peace with past disappointments in order to effect meaningful change in the future."
- Finally, we have the surprise addition of director David Mackenzie's Hell or High Water, a breakout hit at this year's Cannes Film Festival. This gritty Texas tale from screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) follows a desperate pair of bank-robbing brothers—played by Ben Foster and Chris Pine—and the Texas Ranger on their tails (Jeff Bridges). Thanks to the family-saving motivations of the thieves and a timely twist on the housing crisis, the film, according to Owen Gleiberman of Variety, "merges the excitement of a crime-spree noir with a haunting undertow of family history and destiny."
