| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Somehow, August is halfway over. We're clinging to summer and adding THREE new openers this Friday: |
| - SNL's Kyle Mooney co-wrote and stars in the darkly comic treat, Brigsby Bear. A hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival, this fish-out-of-water tale follows Mooney's James as he's dropped into a world where his obsession, the kid's TV show from the film's title, has been cancelled. The resulting journey to finish Brigsby's unfinished story gets the NY Times Critic's Pick stamp of approval. Manohla Dargis calls it "a largely sweet, often very funny fairy tale about the perils and the sustaining pleasures of obsessive fandom."
- Broadway producer Amanda Lipitz makes her feature film debut with the inspired and inspirational documentary, STEP. The film follows the struggles and triumphs of a trio of Baltimore teens as they finish their senior year on the step dancing team of an all-female charter school. Anne Hornaday of the Washington Post calls it "a soaring, heart-bursting portrait...guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet — whether out of vicarious triumph, overpowering pure emotion, or simply to pay tribute to the superheroines at the core of its infectiously inspiring story."
- German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) returns to familiar territory with the thrilling Nazi-era biopic, 13 Minutes. The film follows the unlikely story of George Elser, a clock builder who was just minutes away from taking out Hitler. Movie Nation calls it "a taut, smart...bio-drama of [a] largely forgotten early figure in German resistance to the Hitler regime." Don't miss this limited engagement.
In addition to these new movies, we have several very special screenings on the way in the coming week: |
|
Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik have returned from Summer vacation with another special Friday night screening. 68 Kill is "a punk-rock after hours about femininity, masculinity and the theft of $68,000." This special ONE NIGHT ONLY screening will feature a live (via Skype) intro from director Trent Haaga and Ithaca Fantastik founder Hugues Barbier!
|
|
Cinemapolis is going interstellar next Tuesday with a special ONE NIGHT ONLY screening of the new documentary, THE FARTHEST. It tells the captivating tales of the people and events behind one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration: NASA’s Voyager mission, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this August. This one-night-only theatrical event will feature a special post-show discussion with Nick Sagan, contributor to the film and one of the voices on the famed golden records.

The story has been told before, but never like this. An occupied desert nation. A radical from the wilderness on hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre of a revolution. Internationally acclaimed theatre director Yaël Farber (Les Blancs) draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production on the stage of the National Theatre.
|
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Lady Macbeth and Landline. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, August 17th!
