| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We finish up summer with TWO new movies opening on Friday, and a special opener next Wednesday, August 30th: |
| - Winner of Best Screenplay at this year's Sundance, Ingrid Goes West is a pitch-black comedy for the social media age. Aubrey Plaza stars as Ingrid, an Instagram addict whose tendencies for online stalking pull her to L.A. to spend some time IRL with her latest #obsession (Elizabeth Olsen). This is a "certified fresh" feature debut for writer/director Matt Spicer, but the heart of the film is Plaza as the devious anti-hero. According to Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist, she "finds a way for you to root for her even when she crosses line after line after line."
- Nominated for the Palm d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Good Time is the third feature for directing team The Safdie Brothers. Robert Pattinson (Lost City of Z) stars in this gritty and at times kaleidoscopic crime thriller about a two-bit New York bank robber struggling to keep his family together after a heist goes wrong. David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter calls it a "a richly textured genre piece that packs a visceral charge in its restless widescreen visuals and adrenalizing music."
- Another hit from this year's Sundance, Patti Cake$, starts the Labor Day weekend early with a special opening on Wednesday, August 30th. More on that title in next week's edition.
Don't forget, before we get to the weekend, there are TWO special screenings coming up THIS week: |
|
Cinemapolis is going interstellar next Tuesday with a special ONE NIGHT ONLY screening of the new documentary, THE FARTHEST. It tells the captivating tales of the people and events behind one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration: NASA’s Voyager mission, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this August. This one-night-only theatrical event will feature a special post-show discussion with Nick Sagan, contributor to the film and one of the voices on the famed golden records.

The story has been told before, but never like this. An occupied desert nation. A radical from the wilderness on hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre of a revolution. Internationally acclaimed theatre director Yaël Farber (Les Blancs) draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production on the stage of the National Theatre.
|
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch 13 Minutes, The Little Hours, and Maudie. They all have their last screenings THIS Thursday, August 24th!
