| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
A week of special events is on the way, and it begins with TWO new films opening on Friday: - From the creator of the hilarious What We Do In The Shadows, comes another New Zealand comedy - Hunt for the Wilderpeople. This time around, writer/director Taika Waititi takes us on rollicking chase through the wilderness with 13-year old Ricky (breakout star Julian Dennison) and his craggy foster uncle (Sam Neill). It's loaded with laughs and heart, and it's a NY Times Critic's Pick. Manohla Dargis calls it, "charming and funny...a drama masquerading as a comedy about an unloved boy whom nobody wants until someone says, Yes, I’ll love him."
- Also coming this weekend in a special limited engagement is Equals, the latest from writer/director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy). Set in a future where people have been stripped of emotion, this sci-fi romance stars Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart as a pair of star-crossed lovers who suddenly begin to feel again. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praises their performances as the heart of the movie: "Watch what emotions Stewart and Hoult, both quietly devastating, manage to express with a simple look or a gesture. Equals is really about possibility in a world gone cold from insisting that things can't change."

| Once we're through the weekend, a batch of special screenings begins on Tuesday, July 26 at 7 pm with Lightship 103. Anna Kipervaser and former Ithaca resident Alex Cunningham take their short films on the road together in the experimental cinema salon tradition. Showing recent experimental film and video work, Alex and Anna explore intersections between realities, between abstraction and translation, structure and poetry, internal and external. Tickets are just $8 for this one night only event! |
| The following night, our friends from the Cayuga Lake SUP Cup return to help kick off this year's celebration of Stand Up Paddleboarding with a special presentation of The Paddler Movie. The film takes viewers on an informative journey through the landscapes and communities of Clayoquot Sound and the Great Bear Rainforest. Bob Purdy has been paddling his Standup PaddleSurfer every day since January 1, 2011 to “Change the Way we live on the Planet”, one paddle at a time. Be sure to catch this one time screening on Wednesday, July 27th at 8 pm! |
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Love & Friendship soon. It leaves THIS Thursday, July 21st! |
