| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
We head into the holiday weekend with THREE highly anticipated films all opening on Friday: |
| - Fresh from her win at Cannes for Best Director, Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides) returns to our screens with the Civil War melodrama, The Beguiled. This 21st century remake of a 1971 Clint Eastwood potboiler adds some new twists and a contemporary perspective to the tale of a wounded Union soldier who's taken in by the residents of a Virginia girls' school. Tim Grierson of Screen Daily says it "consistently works as both a straightforward psychosexual thriller and something more troubling — almost unspoken — underneath."
- Director Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) has once again teamed up with screenwriter Mike White (Chuck & Buck) for the timely pitch-black comedy, Beatriz at Dinner. Selma Hayak stars as a holistic healer stranded at her wealthy client's dinner party. Facing class clashes and not-so-thinly veiled racism (largely personified by John Lithgow's billionaire magnate character), Beatriz has some wine and dives into the shark tank. Bilge Ebiri of the Village Voice says it "might be the best performance Salma Hayek has ever given, her quiet, observant reserve eventually giving way to bewilderment and resolve."
- Sam Elliott shines in The Hero, the latest from writer/director Brett Haley (I'll See You In My Dreams). Playing the familiar role of Lee, a Hollywood legend whose best westerns are behind him, Elliot fills the screen in almost every scene of this thoughtful exploration of entering elderhood. Jeannette Catsoulis of the NY Times gives this one the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling Elliott, simply, "a national treasure."
Before we get into the weekend, though, don't forget about a special screening THIS Thursday: |
|
Jude Law stars in the stage production of Obsession, broadcast live from the Barbican Theatre in London. Ivo van Hove directs this new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film.
Gino is a drifter, down-at-heel and magnetically handsome. At a road side restaurant he encounters husband and wife, Giuseppe and Giovanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Giovanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband. But, in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart. |
