| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Our first true weekend of the summer is coming, and we're celebrating with THREE limited engagements that begin on Friday: |
| - The subtle art of commemorating the dead gets the behind-the-scenes treatment in Vanessa Gould's compelling documentary, Obit. Following the New York Times' crack "necrology team," the film provides a unique angle on the worklife of contemporary journalists. Gene Seymour of the Times calls it "modest, observant, graceful and nonchalantly witty."
- Academy Award Winner Christopher Plummer shines as a Kaiser in exile in The Exception, a pre-war thriller from veteran British stage director David Leveaux (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead). Mixing a forbidden romance with a healthy dose of Nazi era espionage, Variety's Peter DeBruge calls it "elegant, well-acted and a good deal sexier than the material might suggest."
- Joel Edgerton (Loving, Midnight Special) stars in the critically acclaimed indie horror hit, It Comes At Night. Set in a desolate house at the edge of what might be the end of the world, two families are thrown together and must navigate ethical pitfalls while struggling to survive. A.O. Scott of the NY Times gives this one the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling it "both shocking and, in retrospect, brutally inevitable...pretty terrifying to sit through, but...even scarier after it’s over, when you sift through what you’ve seen and try to piece together what it may have meant."
Before we get into the weekend, though, don't forget about our special filmmaker appearance THIS Thursday: |
|
Indivisible is an award-winning documentary about the fight to reunite families separated by deportation. Renata, Evelyn, and Antonio were young children when their parents brought them to the U.S. in search of a better life; they were teenagers when their families were deported.
Today, they are known as Dreamers. Indivisible takes place at a pivotal moment in their lives, as they fight for a pathway to citizenship and a chance to be reunited with their loved ones. With the future of immigration reform uncertain, will they see their families again?
|
| Then, looking ahead to the end of NEXT week...
Jude Law stars in the stage production of Obsession, broadcast live from the Barbican Theatre in London. Ivo van Hove directs this new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film.
Gino is a drifter, down-at-heel and magnetically handsome. At a road side restaurant he encounters husband and wife, Giuseppe and Giovanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Giovanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband. But, in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart. |
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Dean and The Wedding Plan. They both play their last shows THIS Thursday, June 22nd! |
