| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
With the students away, the locals will play. In addition to two Ithaca Festival Events happening at the theater, we'll be opening TWO new movies this weekend: - At long last, The Lobster arrives on our screens. Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2015, this absurdist romance from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) transports us to The Hotel, a grand setting where singletons of the future are sent to find love. If they fail to do so in 45 days, they're turned into an animal of their choice to live out their remaining time on earth. Starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz as a pair of potential mates, A.O. Scott of the NY Times calls it "an examination of the state of human affections in the age of the dating app, a critique of the way relationships are now so often reduced to the superficial matching of interests and types. It is also, more deeply, a protest against the standardization of feeling, the widespread attempts — scientific, governmental, commercial and educational — to manage matters of the heart according to rational principles."
- Far more realistic is the Havana-set Viva. An Irish-made film shot entirely in Spanish, it made the short list for last year's Foreign Language Oscar. The title refers to the stage name of Jesus, a Cuban drag star whose life is turned upside down by the return of his estranged father. This simple, heartfelt story of life in the slums is what Stephen Holden of the NY Times calls "an exhilarating hybrid of Social Realism and feel-good aspirational entertainment" Don't miss this limited engagement!

| As next week finishes up, be sure to be here on Thursday, June 9 at 7 pm for a special Cinemapolis / History Center presentation—Projecting Place: The Role of Local History in Documentaries. Join us for an evening with local screenwriters and producers discussing how they utilized local history resources to create their non-fiction films. Featured filmmakers include Austin Bunn, Deborah Hoard, Sue Perlgut, and Gossa Tsegaye. Each presenter will show clips from selected films to illustrate how the information they gathered from local historical documents was used. Tickets now on sale! |
| While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch The Meddler soon. It leaves THIS Thursday, June 2nd! |
