| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
It's the unofficial start of summer, and we head into the holiday weekend with two new movies on Friday: - Writer/director Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, Last Days of Disco, Damsels in Distress) returns to our screens with a NY Times Critics Pick. Known for his witty depictions of contemporary privileged urbanites, Stillman takes a left turn with the hilarious Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship. Starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny, it's based on the early Austen novella "Lady Susan" and follows the matchmaking misadventures of a recent widow and her daughter. The Times' A.O. Scott loves the film's duplicitous characters and barbed wit, calling Love & Friendship "the Whit Stillman movie that some of us have been waiting a long time for, and also a Jane Austen movie that goes some way toward correcting the record of dull and dutiful cinematic Janeism."
- A Bigger Splash is the latest steamy sea-side romance from Italian director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love). It reunites Guadagnino with Tilda Swinton, playing a famous rockstar recovering from surgery, and transports us to an opulent vacation destination in the strait of Sicily. The vacation is soon crashed by her ex-lover (Ralph Fiennes) and his recently discovered daughter. Sexy scenery-chewing performances ensue, and the result is another NY Time Critics Pick. According to The Times' Manohla Dargis, "Guadagnino excels at creating lifestyle pornography of an especially rarefied kind, although in classic European style, he gilds the pleasure with some political guilt." Pack your bags for this wild trip!
