| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
It's a time of commencement ceremonies and other end of school year events, so what better time to get away from it all with some new movies?! Two are on their way this Friday: - Susan Sarandon shines in The Meddler, writer-director Lorene Scafaria's funny and touching sophomore effort. Based on Scafaria's own mother, Sarandon embodies the titular meddler as she leaves New York for a new life in L.A., inserting herself in the middle of the lives of her daughter and everyone else she meets. Thanks to a whip-smart script, Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle says the "movie feels authentic, not like it's following a screenplay going through the motions, but rather like we're following someone real go through life."
- Just added to our calendar for a special one-week engagement is April and the Extraordinary World, the latest animated feat from the producers of Persepolis. Set in a steampunk version of 1940s France, this wild and beautiful adventure follows teenage April as she tries to uncover the mysterious disappearance of the world's great scientists. It's a NY Times Critic's Pick that's not to be missed—reviewer Glenn Kenny hales its "exuberant sense of play" and "sense of otherworldly exhilaration." Catch it while you can!

| Also this weekend, our friends from Ithaca Fantastik (neé the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival) return for a very special Fantastic Film Friday presentation of Belladonna of Sadness. This beautiful new 4K restoration of the lost 1973 psychedelic erotica anime classic will knock your socks off. Basing it loosely on Jules Michelet's 1862 novel, "La Sorcière," Japanese animation master Eiichi Yamamoto created what the NY Times called "compulsively watchable, even at its most disturbing: The imagery is frequently graphic, and still, after over 40 years, it has the power to shock." Get your tickets early for this one time screening - Friday, May 20 at 9:30! |
