| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
The in addition to some special event screenings, our next week starts off with TWO new films coming on Friday: |
| - Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) returns to our screens with the award-winning drama, Graduation. Part crime mystery, part family drama, the film peels back levels of casual corruption to reveal how far a father will go to ensure his daughter's success. Dave Calhoun of Time Out London says, "It’s not a despairing movie – Mungiu even suggests that a new generation might put things right – but it’s a brutally honest one."
- Academy Award winning documentarian Laura Poitras (CitizenFour) fixes her lens on another polarizing figure in Risk. Posing almost more questions than answers, this evolving portrait of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been updated since its premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival to include the massive changes in the global political climate. Like the man at its center, the film is enigmatic, a quality that A.O. Scott of the NY Times calls "at once fascinating, frustrating and entirely understandable."
Also in the coming week, don't miss out on these special events: |
|
Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity. A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. Simon Godwin directs this joyous new production.

Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik are back for another installment of their monthly spotlight on genre films from around the globe. This month, they're going down under with the latest acclaimed Oz-ploitation flick, Hounds of Love. This grim, tense thriller follows a disturbed married couple who abduct a teen girl from an idyllic suburban street. This is a psychopathic, claustrophobic thrill-ride that will leave you rattled.
