| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
The first weekend in May kicks off with THREE new films coming on Friday: |
| - Writer/Director Oren Moverman (The Messenger) brings Herman Koch's acclaimed novel to the screen in The Dinner. A remarkable cast that includes Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, and Rebecca Hall delve into Koch's story of two couples testing the bounds of civility over the titular meal, all while revealing the details of a secret crime that could change the lives of their children. Owen Gleiberman of Variety says this thriller "has a catchy atmosphere of disturbance."
- British director Terrence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea, The House of Mirth) puts his unique twist on the biopic with A Quiet Passion. Transporting us to 19th Century Massachusetts, he focuses on a chapter from the life of great American poet, Emily Dickinson, and paints her as not only a writer, but as a kind of rebel of her era. Michael Pattinson of IndieWire says that, "Given its themes and the tragic circumstances of Dickinson’s life, “Passion” is a refreshingly humorous work."
- Also this week, we open a special limited engagement of the debut film from graphic novelist Dash Shaw. My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea is a uniquely animated mash-up of teen coming of age stories and epic disaster films. Combining wildly different visual styles, the film follows a pair of intrepid (and outcast) teen reporters as they discover that their high school is poised for disaster. Eric Kohn of IndieWire calls it "a cockeyed ode to what it feels like when nobody takes you seriously."
And looking ahead to next Thursday, we'll welcome back National Theatre Live for a new take on classic Shakespeare: |
|
Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity. A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. Simon Godwin directs this joyous new production.
