| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Historic epics and quiet family stories join our current slate this weekend, with THREE new films coming on Friday: |
| - Writer/Director James Gray (The Immigrant) brings his sweeping style to a true-life account in The Lost City of Z. Following the Amazon explorations of British Colonel Percival Fawcett, the film is what Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter calls "a rare piece of contemporary classical cinema."
- Acclaimed Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda (Our Little Sister; Like Father, Like Son) returns to our screens with another subtle family drama. After the Storm follows Ryota, a divorced private detective, as he attempts to put his life back together after the death of his father. As always, the quiet observations of daily life are the hallmark of Hirokazu Kore-eda, who the Village Voice says, "isn't just one of the world's best filmmakers, but one of its most indispensable artists."
- Also this week, we welcome another Oscar Nominee to the screens. Land of Mine was among the nominees for this year's best foreign language feature, and it's easy to see why. Telling the true-life tale of German POWs put to the life-threatening work of defusing more than 2 million landmines on the Danish coastline, Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter says it's both "a moving anti-war essay and...a gripping thriller."
We have MANY special events coming up over the weekend, so please pay close attention to this week's showtimes: |

The Ithaca Pan Asian American Film Festival is now in its third year of showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Asian American experience through film screenings, academic panels, and live performances. This student-founded and primarily student-organized festival addresses the shortage of Asian American stories in mainstream popular culture. Through film and media, IPAAFF pushes to build a vibrant and lasting community among artists, intellectuals, students, and community members. All screenings are free at this public three day event takes
