| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
We celebrate the equinox with a little spring cleaning this weekend, dropping three films and bringing in a couple fresh ones: - The latest from American auteur Terrence Malick (Tree of Life, To The Wonder), the gorgeous and confounding Knight of Cups, arrives on Friday. Featuring an A-list cast that includes Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, and Antonio Banderas, and cinematography from this year's (and last year's...and the year before that) Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, the film is a joy to look at and to ponder over. Just don't expect a linear plot--that's not Malick's style. Instead, sit back and take in a film that SF Chronicle's Mick Mick LaSalle says "is thick with life. Malick pulls into this film so many aspects of consciousness and so many moments of previously uncaptured stray experience that it’s like watching someone tap into the miraculous."
- Also coming this Friday for a special LIMITED ENGAGEMENT is the latest from a decidedly DIFFERENT pair of American auteurs—the Coen Brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis). Hail, Caesar! is a ride of a movie, swinging us back through set-pieces from the studio system days of 1950s Hollywood and featuring an abundance of the Coen Brothers' trademark humor. The caper at the center of the film follows a Hollywood fixer trying to track down a kidnapped superstar, but, as usual, the Coens have some loftier questions to raise. According to the NY Times' Manohla Dargis, the Coens "are scratching off the glossy studio veneer to show what lies beneath, including unspoken desires, even as they’re also putting on the kind of good show that helped build MGM." Don't miss the show! It's here for one week only...

| Friday also marks the return of our friends from Ithaca Fantastik, as we welcome another Fantastic Film Friday. For this outing, Hugues and the gang are taking us to Turkey for the occult horror hit, Baskin. In it, a squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building. Bloody and depraved, this film IS NOT for the faint of heart!
|
| As we head into next week, you'll also want to start making plans for this year's Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival. FLEFF once again comes home to Cinemapolis beginning a four day stint on Thursday, March 31st.
This year's theme is "Landscapes," and you'll find common threads winding through all 100 events of the week-long fest. The full schedule of Cinemapolis films can be found on the FLEFF website.
TAKE NOTE - some of our regular screenings will be pre-empted during FLEFF, so please read our schedule carefully! |
