| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
we wrap up the month with one last week of held-over award-winners and bring in THREE new openers on Friday:
- Graphic novelist Daniel Clowes (Ghost World, Art School Confidential) has adapted another of his creations for the screen. Teaming up with director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) and Wood Harrelson, he brings the hilariously caustic Wilson to life. Sara Stewart of the NY Post says it "has much of the same everything-sucks humor that gave Clowes’ “Ghost World” such sardonic punch 15 years ago, and Harrelson has a ball delivering insults with that goofy grin on his face."
- Another sardonic performance comes from Shirley MacLaine in The Last Word. MacLaine stars as a no-nonsense retired business woman who enlists the help of a newspaper copywriter (Amanda Seyfried) to ensure her own obituary hits all the right notes. James Verniere of the Boston Herald says that "MacLaine and Seyfried have chemistry and make a good mismatched mother-daughter duo."
- Finally, after a week's delay, we welcome another of this year's nominees for Best Animated Feature. Swiss director Claude Barras's My Life as a Zucchini is a beautifully rendered stop-motion film about a gang of displaced children living in a group home. Katherine McLaughlin of The List says that "All ages will benefit from the constructive message relayed in this charming tale of tolerance and understanding that extols the value of grasping on to the good in life, without overlooking how difficult it can be for some to get there."
Also in the coming week, we welcome a few special event screenings: |

Local filmmaker Robert Lieberman will be at the theater for this special ONE DAY ONLY screening of his Ithaca-set musical comedy, Green Lights. Shot in and around our "gorges" city in 2001, it follows location scout Bob Beeman on a series of misadventures as he's mistaken for a top executive of Everest Pictures. Scott Foundas of Variety calls it a "delightful romp." Lieberman will be on hand for a Q & A after the screening on Saturday, March 25th at 2 pm. Don't miss it!
