| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
with the Academy Awards just days away, we're excited to add two more nominees to our screens on Friday: - Nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature, Son of Saul is Hungary's official entry in this year's Academy Awards. This raw look at the brutality of Auschwitz is the outstanding debut feature from writer/director László Nemes. It follows a member of the Sonderkommando as he struggles to acquire a proper burial for the body of a boy he believes to be his son. Lauded for his unflinching portrayal of the Holocaust, Nemes has, according to the Guardian "found a way to create a fictional drama with a gaunt, fierce kind of courage – the kind of courage, perhaps, that it takes to watch it."
- Our second Foreign Language Oscar nominee this weekend is the latest from Danish auteur Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking, The Hunt). A War (Krigen) tells a very personal story of the global war effort in the Middle East. According to Alan Schertsuhl of The Village Voice, the film "is a scrupulous, unglamorized examination of battlefield decision-making - and its potentially devastating impacts, both there and back home." Don't miss this powerful and timely film.
The big weekend approaches, and we have a special reason to come out to the theater this Sunday. |
| I hope you can join us as we celebrate another year of great cinema at the annual “AND THE WINNER IS” gala fundraising event.
It’s not just the awards telecast on the big screen. This gala gives us a yearly opportunity to reflect on the scores of important, quality films that are screened at Cinemapolis—films that would not have otherwise been seen in our community—whether or not they were recognized by the Academy.
Of course, we’ll also have fantastic food from Ithaca’s favorite restaurants…beer, wine, and signature cocktails from our friends at Collegetown Bagels…and chances to take home prizes of your own with silent auctions, drawings, and our “pick the winners” contest that could get you free movies for a year!
Advance tickets are just forty-five dollars or two for eighty. Special discounts for members and students available. |
| While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to catch 45 Years, Brooklyn, and Youth soon. They all leave THIS Thursday, February 25th!
Also, please note in the coming week that due to our annual gala, there are VERY limited screening times on Sunday. |
