OOPS! For some reason our service delivered a VERY early draft of this newsletter to you all this morning. APOLOGIES!
Here's the real deal.

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

Another summer weekend is ahead with FOUR new virtual cinema titles to enjoy. This Friday brings a varied mix of choices that includes horror, comedy, and some cutting edge documentaries.

Before that, though, please join us for a very special VIRTUAL TALKBACK that's part of Ithaca's Virtual Summer of Pride 2020. On Thursday, July 23 at 6 pm, Ithaca College LGBT Center director Luca Maurer will facilitate a discussion on three of our current virtual cinema films with LGBTQ themes: Queen of LapaFor They Know Not What They Do, and Denise Ho: Becoming the SongPre-register now for this special Zoom discussion!

As we continue to wait for word from state and local officials regarding re-opening the cinema, we're hard at work making changes to the space. Check out the video below of the installation of our amazing new mural in the lobby!

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

VIRTUAL CINEMA
AI WEIWEI: YOURS TRULY

Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly

A very absorbing and valuable documentary that movingly puts Ai’s work into personal context."

Human rights become profoundly personal when Ai Weiwei, China’s most famous artist, transforms Alcatraz Island prison into an astonishing expression of socially-engaged art focused on the plight of the unjustly incarcerated. At the core of the installation, called @Large, were portraits of prisoners of conscience coupled with the opportunity to write letters of solidarity to the imprisoned.

Director: Cheryl Haines

Presented in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival

VIRTUAL CINEMA
AMULET

Amulet

“A wild crescendo of demonic possession, body horror and sticky reproductive imagery…[It] marks Garai as an audacious new horror auteur.”

An ex-soldier, living homeless in London, is offered a place to stay at a decaying house inhabited by a young woman and her dying mother. As he starts to fall for her, he cannot ignore his suspicion that something sinister is going on.

Director: Romola Garai
Writer: Romola Garai
Stars: Imelda Staunton, Carla Juri, Alec Secareanu

VIRTUAL CINEMA
BLOODY NOSE, EMPTY POCKETS

Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets

Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets may not be the straight-faced documentary it looks like, but it’s a sober-eyed document of our times nonetheless."

In the shadows of the bright lights of Las Vegas, it’s last call for a beloved dive bar known as the Roaring 20s. That’s the premise, at least; the reality is as unreal as the world the regulars are escaping from. Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets is a mosaic of disparate lives, teetering between dignity and debauchery, reckoning with the past as they face an uncertain future, and singing as their ship goes down.

Directors: Bill Ross IV, Turner Ross
Stars: Peter Elwell, Michael Martin, Shay Walker

VIRTUAL CINEMA
WE ARE LITTLE ZOMBIES

Yes, God, Yes

Similar to Obvious Child, the film avoids over the top tropes and shock value with refreshing sincerity. This is the kind of sex-positive coming of age comedy that smart, curious teens truly deserve."

After an innocent AOL chat turns racy, a Catholic teenager in the early 00s discovers masturbating and struggles to suppress her new urges in the face of eternal damnation.

Director: Karen Maine
Writer: Karen Maine
Stars: Natalia Dyer, Christian Adam, Susan Blackwell, Alisha Boe

CONTINUING ON VIRTUAL CINEMA

We Are Little Zombies
Creating a Character
Guest of Honor
John Lewis: Good Trouble
The Tobacconist
Denise Ho: Becoming the Song
Beats
Queen of Lapa

NEW LOBBY MURAL BY @GRAFFITIEGYPT

Back in the "before times," we put out a call for art to revitalize our lobby with a new mural. With the help of Ithaca Murals, our selection committee reviewed more than 30 proposals submitted by talented artists from across the country and right here at home. One stood out as the perfect fit for our space - Egypt.

The original art has been preserved, and several pieces will be auctioned off at a later date.

In the meantime, we're ecstatic to unveil Egypt's creation. What should it be titled? The artist didn't have an idea. We tentatively suggested "What We Do In The Shadows," but Messrs. Waititi and Clement might take issue what that choice!

COMING SOON TO VIRTUAL CINEMA

Marley
The Fight
Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful
Out Stealing Horses

A very special thanks to all the friends and Cinemapolitans that helped me celebrate my 7th anniversary at the cinema by contributing to my Facebook Fundraiser last week. Nearly 100 gifts were made in just 48 hours, and we raised more that $4,000 to help the theater continue to cover costs during this prolonged closure.

am perpetually humbled by the love this town has for our little art house, and I'm honored to continue to serve our mission to encourage Central New York residents to explore the power of film to entertain, educate, and to celebrate the human experience.

Hope to see you at the movies again soon!

Brett Bossard, Executive Director
