Greetings Cinemapolitans!

A busy weekend is on the way, with new openers and a bevy of special events including a special filmmaker appearance courtesy of the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and the triumphant return of the Family Classics Picture Show!

On Saturday, June 11 at 4:30, our friends at the Saltonstall will welcome back filmmaker Nathan Fitch for a special screening of his short, Drawing Life with George Booth—a look back at the half-century career of the famed New Yorker cartoonist. Joining Nathan for a post-screening conversation will be local artist and former assistant cartoon editor at the New Yorker, Marshall Hopkins.

Then, on Sunday, June 12 at 2 pm, the Family Classics Picture Show series returns with a summer classic! Bring your whole team for a special screening of The Sandlot.

Our long-time emcee, David Moreland, has moved back to NYC, but he'll be with us remotely for a special intro! That, along with some special shorts, will make for a great return from hibernation for the program that promises Kid Friendly Classics at Family Friendly prices!

Tickets are just $2 for kids, $3 for adults, with a maximum charge of $10 per family. The Family Classics Picture Show  series is made possible through the generous support of the Ainslie-Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley.

Meanwhile, it's another weekend of premieres, so get in soon to catch Hit the Road, Men, Montana Story, and Watcher. They all have their final screenings this week!

OPENING FRIDAY, JUNE 10

AFTER BLUE (DIRTY PARADISE)

129 min, NR

In a faraway future, on a wild and untamed female inhabited planet called After Blue, a lonely teenager named Roxy (Paula Luna) unknowingly releases a mystical, dangerous, and sensual assassin from her prison. Roxy and her mother Zora (Elina Löwensohn) are held accountable, banished from their community, and forced to track down the murderer named Kate Bush. Haunted by the spirits of her murdered friends, Roxy sets out on a long and strange journey across the supranatural territories of this filthy paradise. The newest vision from Bertand Mandico (The Wild Boys) plays like a lesbian El Topo (in space!) with stunning 35mm in-camera practical effects, otherworldly set pieces, and a dazzling score by Pierre Desprats.

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Terence Davies, the biopic explores the turbulent life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon. His poetry was inspired by his experiences on the Western Front, and he became one of the leading war poets of the era.

Adored by members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, he embarked on affairs with several men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality. At the same time, broken by the horror of war, he made his life’s journey a quest for salvation, trying to find it within the conformity of marriage and religion.
