ENFANT TERRIBLE

“This film vividly conjures up the shabby, cigarette-ashy world: the West Germany of radical chic and revolutionary paranoia.”

When 22-year-old Rainer Werner Fassbinder storms the stage of the ‘Antitheater’ (Anti-Theatre) in Munich, 1967 and seizes the theatre production without further ado, nobody suspects this brazen nobody to become one of the most important post-war German filmmakers. His passionate and driven character swiftly attracts a bunch of dedicated admirers made up of actors, narcissists and suitors. As if he senses his limited life span, he almost frantically creates film after film. While Fassbinder radically pursues his creative vision and views of society and people, he polarises professionally and privately.

Despite early setbacks, many of his films breakthrough at the most renowned films festivals and are hailed and hated by audience, critics and fellow filmmakers. His anger and his longing for love as well as his self-exploitation, which he also imposes on everyone around him, have made him the most memorable and radical film director, an enfant terrible.

PUNK THE CAPITAL

“Even if you think you already know everything you ever wanted to about Washington’s hardcore punk scene, Punk the Capital will surprise you. It is deeply intelligent and satisfying, a moving and affectionate corrective to punk’s traditionally bleak self-accounting. “

When punk rock erupted in Washington DC, it was a mighty convergence of powerful music, friendships, and clear minds. This film is the first to explore the incredible challenges that this subculture faced when it took root in the Nation’s Capital in the late 1970’s.

Punk the Capital situates DC punk within the larger narratives of rock n’ roll, working as a powerful multi-layered story for both fans and non-fans of punk rock. Featuring musicians such as Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, and Ian MacKaye, this film dives deep into the ideas and sounds from this transformative music scene which continues to be influential culturally and politically around the world.

DIRECTORS: James June Schneider, Paul Bishow

CAST: Cynthia Connolly, Dante Ferrando, Skip Groff, Henry Rollins

“An intelligent and playful
self-reflective take on filmmaking.” – Festival Scope

$2 from each virtual ticket purchase will go to support relief efforts in India

Director, writer and star, Rajat Kapoor, the “godfather” of Indian independent film ( Raghu Romeo, Ankhon Dekhi), has created a charming “meta-movie” about filmmaking itself in his newest, RK/RKAY. Working in the tradition of such classics as Being John Maklovich and The Purple Rose of Cairo, with a light, markedly Indian touch, the film tells the story of a film director whose main character usurps control of the plot line, and eventually, real life.

RK is a filmmaker (played by Rajat Kapoor), making a new picture in which he also plays the lead character of Mahboob. With a high-maintenance actress as the female lead Gulabo (Mallika Sherawat), the film-within-a film is a retro tribute to the cinema of the 1960s. When shooting is finished, and the editing begins, RK has a sinking feeling that the film is not going to come together, that this time he has really screwed up. Sure enough, one afternoon RK gets a call from the editing room – something terrible has happened. Mahboob has “run away, run out of the film” and somehow has entered the real world.
