Subject: 🎥 Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema Listings for Feb 17, 2021 🎥

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

we're continuing our commitment to elevate Black voices and highlight emerging Black filmmakers this Black History month with two remarkable new titles joining the virtual cinema slate on Friday. 17 Blocks and Test Pattern provide two very different, very singular perspectives on the African American experience. Don't miss either of them.

They're joined by three other new films from around the globe, including Japan's entry for this year's Academy Awards and another selection from our friends at Ithaca Fantastik. As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

Also this weekend, we excited to partner with Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences as they celebrate "Toni Morrison at 90." This community-wide collection of events commemorate what would have been the Cornell alumna's 90th birthday this week.

For our part, we're currently hosting a virtual return engagement of Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, available for FREE with the code Morrisonat90. To follow up, we're convening a special film discussion via Zoom on Saturday, February 20th at 4pm. Cinemapolis Board Member and Director of the John Henrik Clarke Africana Library, Eric Acree, will moderate a panel featuring a collection of experts from a cross-section of departments and disciplines at the University. Join in via Zoom by registering here!

17 BLOCKS

“A remarkably raw and heartfelt piece of filmmaking… At its best, 17 BLOCKS reminded me of the deep humanism of Steve James’ work.”

In 1999, filmmaker Davy Rothbart met Emmanuel Sanford-Durant and his older brother, Smurf, during a pickup basketball game in Southeast Washington, D.C. Davy began filming their lives, and soon the two brothers and other family members began to use the camera themselves.

Spanning 20 years, this story illuminates a national, ongoing crisis through one family’s raw, stirring and deeply personal saga. Made from more than 1,000 hours of footage, it all starts on the street where they lived in 1999, 17 blocks behind the U.S. Capitol.

DIRECTOR: Davy Rothbart

SCREENWRITERS: Davy Rothbart (Writer), Jennifer Tiexiera

CAST: Emmanuel Durant Jr., Akil ‘Smurf’ Sanford, Cheryl Sanford

TEST PATTERN

“Test Pattern offers a fresh way of examining sexual assault and its aftermath on screen, one that feels just as emblematic of its moment as Thelma & Louise.”

Part psychological horror, part realist drama, this exhilarating debut feature from Shatara Michelle Ford is set against the backdrop of national discussions around inequitable health care and policing, the #metoo movement, and race in America. Test Pattern follows an interracial couple whose relationship is put to the test after a Black woman is sexually assaulted and her white boyfriend drives her from hospital to hospital in search of a rape kit.

Winner of top prizes at the BlackStar and New Orleans Film Festivals, this gripping social thriller offers a unique exploration of institutional racism and sexism from a Black female point of view.

Content warning: This film includes a depiction of sexual assault.

FOOD CLUB

“the director and her screenwriter…know how to flavour the whole film with a bittersweet and sincere look at old age, and in the end portray… a beautiful alternative of life.”

Vittoria Scarpa, Cineuropa

Three girlfriends, all in the autumn of their lives and having troubles of their own, travel to southern Italy on a cooking class trip. Marie’s husband left her on Christmas Eve, Berling is the eternal single who denies her age and is living the sweet life, while Vanja lives in the memories of her late husband.

The three women discover that they have far more to offer than they had ever dreamed and that it’s never too late.

TRUE MOTHERS

“[T]he film shimmers with beauty and sadness…wows in the end with an emotional banger of an ending that’s a truly devastating convergence of all the film’s threads.”

After a long and unsuccessful struggle to get pregnant, Satoko and her husband decide to adopt a child.

The family’s orderly existence is shattered by the arrival of Hikari, a young woman claiming to be Asato’s biological mother, demanding his return. As tensions mount, Satoko grows more and more emboldened to defend her family.

CLIMATE OF THE HUNTER

“…a dark arthouse fantasy that brings to mind the films of Ingmar Bergman and Andy Milligan.”

When the three come together for dinner it has all the makings of a lovely meal filled with desire, memories…and blood.
