Subject: 🎥 Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema Listings for Feb 10, 2021 🎥

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

It's hard to believe that it was a year ago this week that we were hosting our annual "And the Winner Is..." Awards Night Party. While we may not be coming together inside the theater to celebrate the big awards this year, there are plenty of awards hopefuls coming your way virtually in the coming weeks, including FOUR new offerings arriving this weekend.

In other news - when it rains, it pours—in this case literally! A sprinkler pipe in theater 5 failed last week, cascading water down the risers and aisles, requiring the removal of all the carpeting in the auditorium. Moisture mitigation experts are still on the job to make sure nothing else was permanently damaged. We'll keep you posted on the progress and on any support we might need to complete the repairs.

BLIZZARD OF SOULS

“Blizzard of Souls derives its power from its strong, simple depiction of war seen through the eyes of an innocent 17-year-old soldier. …exceptionally atmospheric cinematography…”

Latvia’s Official Submission
to the Academy Awards

Blizzard of Souls pays stark witness to the horrors and brutality of the First World War, as seen through the eyes of an innocent 17-year-old farm-boy turned soldier. Though he is underage, and his dad, a former marksman, is overage for the army, they are both conscripted into one of Latvia’s first national battalions. The thrill of training is soon followed by reality, as shells burst around them in the endless mud. He grows up on the battlefield, fighting at the side of his father and brother, their lives are constantly in jeopardy.

Adapted from the book by Aleksandrs Grins, which was banned in the U.S.S.R., the story was based on Grins’ own war experiences in a Latvian battalion, and the film is the biggest box office success in Latvia in the past 30 years.

LAPSIS

““a smart class-conscious sci-fi parable”

New York, an alternate present: the quantum computing revolution has begun and investors are lining their pockets in the quantum trading market. Building the network, though, requires miles of infrastructure to be laid between huge magnetic cubes by “cablers” – unprotected gig workers who compete against robots to pull wires over rough terrain.

Queens delivery man Ray Tincelli is skeptical of new technology, and the buy-in to start cabling is steep, but he struggles to support himself and his ailing younger brother, who suffers from a mysterious illness. So when Ray scores a shady permit, he believes their fortunes may have finally changed. What he doesn’t expect is to be pulled into a conspiracy involving hostile cablers, corporate greed, and the mysterious “Lapsis” who may have previously owned his permit.

LAPSIS is a darkly comic and timely look at the gig economy and the failed utopian promises of big tech.

MAYOR

NY TIMES CRITIC’S PICK

“Surprisingly funny. Hadid comes across as a cleareyed, forthright leader. But Mayor also stands out because Osit has thought it through in cinematic terms.”

MAYOR is a real-life political saga following Musa Hadid, the Christian mayor of Ramallah, during his second term in office. His immediate goals: repave the sidewalks, attract more tourism, and plan the city’s Christmas celebrations. His ultimate mission: to end the occupation of Palestine.

Rich with detailed observation and a surprising amount of humor, MAYOR offers a portrait of dignity amidst the madness and absurdity of endless occupation while posing a question: how do you run a city when you don’t have a country?
