This month, our character focus is Meekness. The operational definition of meekness is “yielding my personal rights and expectations to God.”
Often we experience conflicts with others because we sense that our rights and expectations are being threatened, and we try to guard them. An expectation is a strong assumption that a desire will be fulfilled. If an expectation is not met, you might be disappointed. A right is a privilege or position that is truly yours to claim. Everyone has been given specific rights by their Creator, but often we mistakenly assume something to be a right when it is not.
Angrily demanding our rights and expectations becomes a heavy burden, which leads to bitterness. While God is merciful and slow to anger, His wrath is just and righteous. Our wrath, however, does not produce good results. If we truly trust God as our Protector and Father, we can exhibit meekness by willingly releasing any claim to our rights and expectations. |
