A mother of seven, including a child with Down syndrome and two adopted children from Haiti. A beloved school teacher from Notre Dame Law School for over 14 years. She commutes regularly almost 2 hours to sit on her appeals court, and she is a devout Catholic.
Yet, like many others, she was criticized for living out her faith. In 2017 when Amy was appointed a judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, a senator attacked her faith saying “…when you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you. And that’s of concern”. She was attacked for the belief that her faith in Christ was an impediment to her job and the role she would have in government.
Christ knew that we would be persecuted for our faith. Yet he tells us to rejoice in our persecutions saying “Blessed are you when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake" (Matthew 5:11).
Amy was, and still is today persecuted for standing up for her faith. And we at Catholic to the Max thank her for remaining steadfast in her beliefs and support all those keeping the faith in the workplace and politics.
With her recent nomination to fill the Supreme Court seat, we wanted to offer a way to allow everyone to show their support and appreciation for her and all others that stand firm in Christ despite what the world says. We’ve taken those piercing words and have proudly put them on T-shirts, reminding all that we are unashamed to be persecuted for Jesus.
May we always remember, that if the world hates us, to realize that it hated Christ before us.
