Subject: "...all that I have written seems like straw to me"

In the year 1225, St. Thomas Aquinas was born into a wealthy family in the Lazio region of Italy. There he began his education at 5 years old, but when war eventually broke out, he was transferred to a medieval college in Naples in his later years.

It is believed that it was at this college Thomas was introduced to his philosophical influences, such as Aristotle, Maimonides, and Averroes, but also where he met John of St. Julian. John was a Dominican preacher that had convinced Thomas to join the recently founded Dominican order.

When Thomas' family learned of his desire to join the Dominicans, they greatly disapproved and forced him to stay as this would ruin the family name. At this time, the Dominicans were a startup, mendicant order and his family intended to have him installed in a wealthy abbot of a large monastery. Therefore, they had him locked away into the family tower, and his brothers even hired a prostitute to try and dissuade him from joining the Dominicans. When she entered St. Thomas' room, he chased her out with a smoldering log however, and immediately began to pray. He drew a cross on the wall with the charred log, and was then visited by two angles of purity who placed an angelic girdle around his waist. From here on, St. Thomas never suffered a lustful thought or action for the rest of his life. It was this holy purity that was the key to Thomas' massive intellect.

Eventually, with a change of heart, his mother decided it was better if Thomas "secretly escaped". She planned an exit with him through his window from where he then journeyed back to Naples. There, he met the Master General of the Dominican Order, and began to study once again, this time at the College of St. James.

Thomas was quiet and didn't speak much, and this led many of his peers to believe he had a mental disorder. But Albert Mangus, the Chair of Theology at St. James, prophetically said,

"You call him a dumb ox, but in his teaching, he will one day produce such a bellowing that it will be heard throughout the world".

St. Thomas eventually went on to officially join the Dominicans, become a professor, and write. Word of him quickly spread, and he was later invited to serve as the papal theologian in Rome, and eventually to teach at the Studium Conventuale, the first school to teach a full range of philosophy on both natural and moral natures. Although Thomas spent most of his life writing, it was during this time period that he wrote his most famous work, Summa Theologica.

By the conclusion of his regency, the Dominicans called Thomas to establish a university wherever and with whoever he pleased. He chose to return to Naples to build his university there, where he took the regent master post.

In 1273, a man by the name of Domenic of Caserta recorded seeing Thomas crying and levitating in prayer before an icon of the crucified Christ at the Dominican convent of Naples.

It is said that during this prayer Christ told Aquinas, "You have written well of me Thomas. What reward would you have for your labor?"

Thomas replied, "Nothing but you, Lord."

Following this event, something had changed with Thomas, but no one truly knows why. He abandoned his normal routine and gave up writing. When begged to return to work, he simply replied,

"I cannot, because all that I have written seems like straw to me."

It is believed that St. Thomas had received a vision from God, and that words were simply inadequate from that point on.

In the year 1274, St. Thomas became ill and was looked after by monks at the Cistercian Fossanova Abbey. There he received his last rites and prayed, "I receive Thee, ransom of my soul. For love of Thee have I studied and kept vigil, toiled, preached, and taught..."
