| | Mentioned over 70 times in the Bible, the Cedar of Lebanon holds a significant symbolism in our Catholic faith, but is an analogy that is quite often overlooked. Perhaps the most recognizable reference to the tree is from the book of Ezekiel. Here, we hear God say, “I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches. All the trees of the field will know that I the LORD bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. 'I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.' ” (Ezek 17:22-24). | | | | So what does it mean for our Catholic lives to flourish like a Cedar of Lebanon? Well, the symbolism to this tree is truly bountiful. To begin, these Cedars have extremely long life spans; most live anywhere from 1,000-2,000 years, while some are even reputed to be older than 3,000 years old! Their roots are also equipped with a substance that allows them to drill through the toughest of rock so they can anchor themselves deep into the rocky ground. The image presented here is to show that those who live by faith are enabled by God’s grace to weather all forms of difficulty and blossom into the beautiful life God intended. Cedars of Lebanon also have a unique characteristic in which they are able to survive off of neighboring Cedars! When many grow close to one another, their branches and foliage often intertwine and will merge together over time. This way if one tree dies, its limbs will be sustained by the other tree. (“Behold how good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.” - Psalm 133:1). | | | | The Cedar can also grow up to an astounding 120ft height (imagine a 10 to 12 story building)! Their branches extent 30-50 feet from its trunk, inviting birds and all forms of life to its proximity. For its size however, these trees grow extremely slow. They only grow between 6-12 centimeters every year. This too is a perfect resemblance of our faith. Often times we think and wish that our spiritual growth can be expedited. That we can change and live the lives Christ intended for us overnight. But the truth is, just like any relationship, our life with Christ takes time and work. It must be fostered, cared for, and cultivated each and every day. And while in the moment it may seem that our progression is moving too slowly or maybe even not progressing at all, we can look back months or even years and see how far we’ve walked with Christ. The Cedar’s mighty height is only made possible by what we don’t see. For every foot that we see above ground, the Cedar’s roots are equal to or even doubled underground. What an amazing analogy to our Faith! To grow spiritually, we must be deeply rooted in His truth and His way of life. For we will only grow as tall as deeply as we are rooted! | St. Boniface, Pray for us! |
